Nature’s Harmony

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean we’ve taken a vacation from putting up quilt blocks! Today we put up a 4′ block on the Leroy Farmers Market building on the corner of Kent St. and Old Mackinaw Trail in Leroy, MI. The weather was mild, but rainy and foggy. That didn’t deter the Farmers Market people! They’re a hardy bunch.
Here’s what they have to say about their block: “”Nature’s Harmony.” Farmers and gardeners work in harmony with nature when they are sensitive to the elements of earth, water, fire, and air. They must know the best soil conditions (earth), how much to irrigate (water), sunlight requirements (fire), and what temperatures (air) are needed for optimal growth. The four-pointed star represents these elements, and the seasons, and what each season requires. Our quilt square design symbolizes Nature’€™s Harmony with its sun, the farmer’€™s moon, and the four-pointed star. As cultivators of food, farmers and gardeners cannot hope to control nature, but instead must learn to work in harmonious partnership with the seasons and elements. ”
This block was paid for by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids.
