Moonlit Woods

The Woods family owns several Centennial farms in the Reed City area. They have named this block Moonlit Woods, as that is what they call their family corporation. This twelve pointed star with the moon in the background is stunning. The trees in the foreground represent the Woods’ grandchildren. The block is located on the loafing shed on the corner of Three Mile Rd. and 200th Avenue, southeast of Reed City, MI.

County Fair

Located right next door to the Osceola County Fairgrounds in Evart, this County Fair block is a beauty. It is on the north wall of the Osceola Grand Hotel, facing the camping area of the fairgrounds. The owner of the hotel said that he wanted the campers at the fairgrounds to be able to enjoy the block.

Star of Heaven

Dave & Delores Arndt chose this Star of Heaven block to place on their garage. Dee had made a quilt with this block in it, and she thought it would be a nice one to put on the garage. We think so, too! It is located at 14730 Wildwood Rd., Evart, MI, in the Sunrise Lake area.

The pictures were taken just as the sun was setting, so the light is not the best. I tried to enhance the closeup a bit.

Love of Art

The Osceola League for Arts and Humanities studio/gallery in Evart, MI recently installed this quilt block on the front of their buiding. It is actually two mirror image blocks angled out a bit from the building at the point where they meet, so they can be seen more easily from both directions as you drive down the street. Here’s what they say about it:

We have decided to name our quilt block “Love of Art”
Two OLAH Studio quilt blocks were installed November 28, 2011, at 207 N. Main Street in Evart, Michigan.
The Osceola League for Arts and Humanities chose this block design for several reasons.
The pink heart symbolizes OLAH’s love of art. The blue surrounding the heart expresses tranquility.
The purple bud represents artists who are just realizing their potential. The green leaves depict artistic growth.
The yellow border promotes a sunny outlook on life. Take time to enjoy the art that surrounds us !

The Studio is all set up for the annual Christmas Gift Shop.

Grandma’s Heart

Located on her garage near Evart on 110th
Avenue,
this heart quilt block is based on a quilted pillow top that Barb made a few years ago.

To add a little interest in the large heart, we divided the main part into four smaller squares. Barb wanted to honor her four grandchildren, so the small hearts were added to represent them.

Heart of a Champion

The Reed City High School art teacher contacted us about doing a unit on the quilt trail with her art classes. We were able to offer the school a quilt block with the MCACA grant as well. Approximately 80 students learned something about quilting, quilting history, and the quilt trail. As part of their project, each student created a 12″ quilt block on canvas board. A few of them are pictured here.

A contest was held to choose the block for the school. It was won by student Heidi Pemberton, and is in memory of two beloved teachers who left them way too early.
“Matt “Sunny” Sunderlin – His slogan was “Heart of a Champion” which is the name of the block. He passed away in 2010. He was 40 years old.
The other teacher is Angie Pontz. The hearts on the design are in remembrance of her and her work with the American Heart Association. She
died of a brain aneurism this past fall.”

The block is installed on the press box, facing the student parking lot.

Corn and Beans

Clementshaw Feeds in Reed City, MI just put up this Corn and Beans quilt block. It seemed appropriate to choose a block with a name related to farming. Its bold yellow, orange and teal contrast nicely with the brown siding, and an on-point setting was just right for the already-in-place on-point frame!

Irish Chain

Elsie Connor made this little Irish Chain quilt and we used it as the jumping off point for the quilt block for their garage. Since their heritage is Irish, this was a logical choice for their quilt block. Elsie quilted shamrocks in the plain blocks on her quilt, but we made them more visible by painting them. The block can be seen on M-66, about 1/4 mile south of US10, from the southbound land.

Sawtooth Pinwheel

This Sawtooth Pinwheel quilt block pays homage to the beginnings of Evart, MI as a lumbering town. It is located on the Evart Historical Society Museum/Evart Public Library. The block was paid for by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, through the Greater Grand Rapids Arts Council.
